Treasure hunts

Torn treasure maps turn up in chests, on the end of a fishing line and on merchants' stalls. A Merchant deciphers one into a map with a red X; whoever follows it digs up a chest of Belly, goods and, sometimes, a Devil Fruit box.

The torn maps

There are three grades: the Torn Rumor Map, the Torn Old Map and the Torn Legendary Map. The tooltip says who can read it ("Only a Merchant of level X can read it").

Where they are found

  • Common chests: shipwrecks (map, supply and treasure chests), underwater ruins (small and big), desert pyramids, jungle temples, pillager outposts, abandoned mineshafts and dungeons. 30 % of these chests hold a map: a Rumor map 80 % of the time, an Old map 20 %.
  • Rich chests: buried treasure, woodland mansions and, from Mine Mine no Mi, the large pirate ship's treasure, the medium pirate ship's captain, the Marine battleship's treasure, the Marine large and small bases' captain, the bandit fort's secret stash, the ghost ship's captain, and easy and hard caravan chests. 50 % of these hold a map: Rumor 50 %, Old 35 %, Legendary 15 %.
  • Fishing: when a rod brings up junk, a Torn Rumor Map comes with it 6 % of the time. See the Fisher.
  • Merchants' stalls: a Torn Rumor Map on 35 % of stalls (600 Belly), a Torn Old Map on 12 % (3 000), a Torn Legendary Map on 3 % (15 000). See Merchants and contracts. The Ship Merchant's stall has them far more often: 80 %, 40 % and 12 %.
  • At sea (Events at sea): the merchant ship's chests and barrels hold a Torn Rumor Map 10 % of the time, its hidden chest a Torn Old Map 25 %; a wreck guarded by a Sea King holds them 25 % (Rumor) and 8 % (Old) of the time in every container, a wreck nothing guards 12 % and 3 %. Every big order of the Ship Merchant that does not give a score recipe gives a torn map.
  • Contract rewards: a public contract adds a Torn Rumor Map 20 % of the time; the contract kept for Merchants adds a Torn Old Map 50 % of the time.
  • Treasure chests: a Rumor chest holds a Torn Old Map 5 % of the time, an Old chest a Torn Legendary Map 5 %.

Deciphering

Use (right-click) the torn map. Only a player who practises the Merchant trade can read it, at level 1 for a Rumor map, 20 for an Old map and 75 for a Legendary map, and only in the Overworld. Anyone else is told "Only a Merchant can read this map" (or the level it takes) and keeps the scrap, to sell or give to a Merchant.

Once deciphered, the scrap becomes a Treasure Map (Rumor / Old / Legendary): a map of the area around the treasure, with a red X. The treasure lies in a random direction from where you stood:

Grade Merchant level Distance to the X Merchant XP when found
Rumor 1 150-400 blocks 100
Old 20 400-900 blocks 400
Legendary 75 900-1 800 blocks 1 200

Finding the treasure

Hold the treasure map in your hand. The chest is only put in the ground when a player holding that map comes within 24 blocks of the X: "The treasure is close: dig under the X!", with a chime. It is buried under the X, below the top block of the ground or of the sea floor.

With the map still in hand, hints appear as you close in:

  • "Close..." within 8 blocks;
  • "Very close!" within 4;
  • "Right under your feet!" within 1.5.

The X alone only gets you within about 4 blocks, since one pixel of the map is 4 blocks: follow the hints for the rest.

A copied map finds nothing

Each map has its own treasure. If you copy it at a cartography table, only the first copy to reach the X buries the chest; the others arrive at an empty spot.

The chest

Anyone can open the chest, or break it. The first player to open it gets the "Treasure found" message and the X Marks the Spot advancement (and Legendary Treasure for a legendary map), plus the grade's Merchant XP if they practise the Merchant trade.

Rumor Old Legendary
Belly Pouch 200-600 Belly 1 000-3 000 Belly 4 000-10 000 Belly
Goods 3-5 draws 4-6 draws 5-7 draws
Devil Fruit box 10 % 20 % 35 %
Extra torn map 5 %: Torn Old Map 5 %: Torn Legendary Map -

The chest does not stay: once it is empty and closed, or five minutes after it was first opened, it goes away. Whatever is still inside drops on the ground, and the ground it was buried in is put back.

Devil Fruit boxes

When a chest holds a box, its kind is drawn: a Rumor chest always gets a Wooden Box; an Old chest a Wooden Box 60 % of the time, an Iron Box 40 %; a Legendary chest a Wooden Box 40 %, an Iron Box 35 %, a Golden Box 25 %. Per chest, that gives:

Chest Wooden Box Iron Box Golden Box
Rumor 10 % - -
Old 12 % 8 % -
Legendary 14 % 12.25 % 8.75 %

The goods

Each draw picks one line; the number in brackets is its weight, out of the total for that grade.

No treasure structure

Cruise adds no treasure structure of its own: the torn maps are added to vanilla and Mine Mine no Mi chests (see above), and the treasure chest is a plain chest put under the X when the map's holder arrives.
