Bestiary and Log Book

Cruise keeps two records of what you have found: the Bestiary, with every fish and creature you have caught, and the Navigator's Log Book, with every land and place you have visited. Both pay Belly, and trade XP, each time you fill a further tenth of them.

Bestiary two tabs, Fish and Creatures; opened from the Fisher's or the Hunter's page
Log Book two sections, Lands and Places; opened from the Navigator's page
Rewards ten tiers per tab or section, up to 100 000 Belly and 6 000 XP

Opening them

There is no Bestiary item and no key of its own. Open your professions book (the Professions key, K by default) and click the Fisher or the Hunter: on that trade's page, a Bestiary button sits beside the back arrow. The Navigator's page has a Log Book button in the same place instead.

The Bestiary

The Bestiary is an open book with two tabs, Fish and Creatures.

The left page

  • "N / M caught" for the current tab.
  • A completion bar with a notch at each of its ten tiers. A notch turns gold once its tier is paid.
  • Hover the bar to see every tier and its reward: paid ones in green, the next in white, the rest in grey.
  • Below the bar, a grid of every species of that kind, 36 to a page (scroll or use the arrows):
    • species you have caught are drawn in colour;
    • species you haven't caught are black shadows named "???".

Species are ordered by how much XP they are worth, which is roughly the order you meet them.

The right page

Click a species to show it here:

  • its picture, drawn larger;
  • its name ("???" if not caught yet);
  • the level it takes, e.g. "Hunter level 22";
  • "Caught: N", or "Not caught yet". A species caught before the Bestiary existed in your world says "Caught before the bestiary";
  • for a fish, its record size, the biggest you have landed: "Record: 42.0 cm";
  • Where it lives: its habitats. A creature that needs the Enhanced Bug Catcher Net says "Only with: Enhanced Bug Catcher Net". The habitats show even for a shadow, so the book tells you where to go looking.

How the pages fill

  • Every Cruise fish you land and every creature you catch adds one to its page, whatever your trade. In Crew mode a non-Hunter's catches count too, though they can only catch the level-1 creatures.
  • The first catch of a species shows "New in the bestiary: name" above your hotbar.
  • Each rare variant has its own page: the Golden Hercules and the Invisible Swallowtail.
  • A released creature caught again doesn't count.
  • The Creatures tab has 33 pages: the 31 species plus the 2 rare variants. The Fish tab lists every fish the Fishmonger buys; the Sea Kings are not in it.

The Bestiary is kept with your character and survives death.

Completion rewards

Every tenth of a tab caught pays Belly to anyone, plus XP in that tab's trade if you practise it: Fisher XP for fish, Hunter XP for creatures.

Tier Belly Trade XP Creatures needed (of 33)
10 % 500 50 4
20 % 1 000 100 7
30 % 2 000 150 10
40 % 3 500 250 14
50 % 5 000 400 17
60 % 8 000 600 20
70 % 12 000 900 24
80 % 20 000 1 400 27
90 % 35 000 2 200 30
100 % 100 000 6 000 33

When a tier is reached, the chat says so ("Bestiary: 10% of the Creatures caught! +500 Belly, +50 Hunter XP") and a level-up sound plays. If your purse is too full to take the Belly, the tier waits: it pays at your next new catch, or when you next open the book.

See Trades and levels for what the XP is worth.

The Log Book

The Log Book belongs to the Navigator and opens from the Navigator's page. It has two sections, Lands and Places:

  • Lands: every Overworld biome you have stood in.
  • Places: every kind of structure you have stood in, or come within 8 blocks of. Buried treasure isn't counted.

The book also keeps the names of the villages you have been to.

Each section has its own bar and the same ten tiers as the Bestiary: Belly to anyone, plus Navigator XP if you practise the trade. Anyone's Log Book fills, but only a Navigator earns XP from it: besides the tiers, 25 XP for each new biome and 50 XP for each new kind of place. The Navigator's page covers it in full.
